Average Calculator (Mean, Median, Mode)
Paste or type a list of numbers to get all three measures of central tendency at once, along with the range and count. Comparing mean and median is the quickest way to spot skew in data.
Fill in the fields above and select Calculate to see your result and the full working.
Formula used
Mean = sum ÷ count. Median = the middle value once sorted. Mode = the most frequent value
How to use this calculator
- Type or paste your numbers into the field.
- Any mix of commas, spaces and new lines works as a separator.
- Compare mean and median — a large gap means outliers are pulling the average.
Example calculation
For 12, 15, 15, 18, 22, 47:
Sum = 129, count = 6 → mean = 21.5
Middle two values are 15 and 18 → median = 16.5
15 appears twice → mode = 15. The mean sits above the median because 47 is an outlier.
What does this result mean?
The mean uses every value, which makes it sensitive to outliers; a single extreme figure can drag it a long way. The median ignores magnitude beyond position, so it describes 'typical' better in skewed data such as incomes or house prices. The mode is most useful for categorical or repeated data. Reporting mean and median together is far more informative than either alone.
Frequently asked questions
- When should I use median instead of mean?
- Whenever the data is skewed or contains outliers — salaries, house prices and response times are classic cases.
- Can a data set have more than one mode?
- Yes. If two or more values tie for the highest frequency, the set is bimodal or multimodal and all of them are listed.
- What does the range tell me?
- Only the spread between the smallest and largest values. Standard deviation is a better measure of typical spread because it accounts for every value.
